Understanding Parkinson Disease
Article Abstract:
More research is needed to determine which environmental factors are associated with Parkinson's disease. Although some studies have found a gene mutation associated with some cases of Parkinson's disease, a 1999 study found that genetic factors probably don't play a role in most cases. The discovery that the chemical MPTP caused parkinson-like symptoms indicated that some environmental factor might be responsible. The disease seems to involve free radicals that damage cell membranes, leading to cell death. Effective drugs include selegiline, pramipexole, ropinirole, bromocriptine, pergolide, and levodopa. Transplantation of human fetal dopamine cells is still considered an experimental treatment.

The Role of APOE [epsilon]4 in Modulating Effects of Other Risk Factors for Cognitive Decline in Elderly Persons
Article Abstract:
The apolipoprotein E (APOE) epsilon4 gene appears to increase the risk of mental decline in the elderly and is independent of other risk factors. In a study of 5,888 people aged 65 or older, 70% did not experience mental decline when followed for 5 to 7 years. Those with evidence of cardiovascular disease did experience mental decline over this time period. Those with cardiovascular disease and the APOE epsilon4 gene were even more likely to experience mental decline than those with cardiovascular disease and no APOE epsilon4 gene.

Positron Emission Tomography in Evaluation of Dementia: Regional Brain Metabolism and Long-term Outcome
Article Abstract:
A PET scan of the brain can identify people with progressive dementia such as Alzheimer's disease, according to a study of 146 patients with symptoms of dementia. PET scans measure glucose metabolism in the brain.
